WRS Introductory Workshop®  presents the multisensory structured language principles and techniques of the Wilson Reading System® (WRS).  This 3 day (15 hour) workshop includes hands-on practice and application of skills with the WRS Lesson Plan.

This Introductory Workshop serves as the prerequisite for WRS Level 1 Certification and upon completion participants are entitles to apply for 1 graduate credit from Fitchburg State University for a fee of $150 paid directly to FSU.

Wilson Reading System® Level 1 Certification

WRS® ONLINE WORD STUDY (WRS STEPS 1-6) and Practicum

The WRS® Level 1 Certification course is designed to prepare teachers to effectively implement WRS® Steps 1-6 with students reading and spelling below grade level and those diagnosed with a language-based learning disbaility.

Successful completion of the Online Basic Word Study course when combined with WRS® Steps 1-6 Practicum will result in WRS® Level 1 Certification

This online course provides practical application of reading research, with particular emphasis in phonological awareness, phonics and spelling at the beginning levels of decoding and encoding.  It provides specific procedures to teach word-study concepts presented in WRS® Steps 1-6, and includes a 12 month membership in the Intensive Community.

Duration: approx. 90 hours

A Wilson Trainer meets with each teacher/student pair five times during the school year, at the LTR Office and provides observations with written and verbal feedback.  Participants must demonstrate mastery of the Wilson lesson plan, including multisensory techniques and effective strategies in a 1:1 setting.

Duration: Participates are encouraged to complete the Word Study Online Course and Practicum within the school year. Minimum of 60 complete lessons and achievement of Step 4.2, plus pre and post testing.

 Advanced Strategies for MLS Instruction (WRS Group Mastery)

This 10-hour (two-day) workshop delves into essential techniques and strategies to improve all aspects of WRS group instruction through hands-on practice and discussion, and prepares participants for the Group Mastery Practicum.

Wilson Just Words® Training

Provides a curriculum for the study of word structure through the six syllable types in English and the most common Latin roots.  It is a highly explicit, multisensory decoding and spelling program for students in grades 4-12 and adults who do not require intensive intervention but do require explicit decoding and spelling instruction due to word level deficits. Those students with decoding or spelling scores in the 15th-50th percentile range.

Just Words® is based on the research validated Wilson Reading System® and moves at an accelerated pace by focusing primarily on the concentrated study of word structure for reading and spelling.

• 45 minutes per class/5 days a week
• 14 units (each will take an average 2 weeks) plus 2 review weeks = plus 2 review weeks = 30 weeks

Just Words® can also be presented as a three-day per week class but will be completed over 1 1/2 years.  In year one approximately 10 out of 14 units will be completed.

Assessments: At the beginning of each unit, student progress will be monitored using curriculum-based measurement and Unit Tests which are included at the end of each unit to determine mastery.

Wilson Fluency® Half Day Workshop

Based on the skill building sequence of the Wilson Reading System®, WILSON Fluency® provides extended reading passages to give students the focused practice that helps increase fluency and comprehension.

• Phonetic and high-frequency word practice
• Controlled short phrases with taught word patterns and high-frequency/sight words practice
• Longer phrases with both taught and untaught elements for generalization
• Phrased and unphrased versions of a story
• Practice with enriched and decodable passages to enhance listening & reading comprehension and develop vocabulary
• Non-controlled decodable passages in the Basic Reader help students transfer emerging decoding skills to authentic text with support & success
• Laminated Tally Sheets and Student Recording forms make it easy to monitor student progress
